Explanation:

This cylindrical candle box was made by E. J. Hall for the officers’ wardroom on a 19th century Royal Naval ship.  It is made of stamped sheet iron and has traces of black paint, probably original.  The reverse of the box has two vertical bars to enable it to be secured to the bulkhead.  On the lid of the box are soldered two brass labels, one with the name and address of the maker, the other with the words ‘WARD ROOM’.
